Sherry Minall, age 9, of Birmingham, Ala., for her question:
WHERE CAN YOU FIND AN IMPALA?
An impala is a swift, graceful antelope that you'll find living wild in Africa. The animal lives in lightly wooded areas from Kenya and Uganda to South Africa. The impala is also an animal that is found in many zoos.
An impala will easily cover 30 feet in a single leap and it can run as fast as 50 miles an hour.
An impala stands from 33 to 37 inches high at the shoulder and weighs from 100 to 180 pounds. The animal's glossy coat is mostly reddish brown on the top and sides and white on the tail and underparts. The males have lyre shaped horns up to 3 feet long.
The strongest males lead harem herds, which consist of females and young animals. The other males stay together in bachelor herds or they live alone.
An impala will eat fruit, grass and leaves. Its enemies include leopards, lions and wild African hunting dogs.
