Alice Brothers, age 11, of Montgomery, Ala., for her question:
WHO STARTED THE CAMP FIRE GIRLS?
The successful Camp Fire Girls organization was founded in 1910 by a physician and national leader in recreational programs for young people, Luther Gulick, and wife, Charlotte. Today, the Camp Fire Girls organization has almost a million people involved in more than 350 local councils in about 30,000 communities.
For more than 20 years, the Gulicks operated a family camp in Connecticut. In 1909, they opened the first girls' camp in the United States. A year later the Camp Fire Girls was organized. It was in the same year that Gulick had also helped found the Boy Scouts of America.
Camp Fire's major youth programs include the Blue Birds, for girls 6 8, the Adventurers, for girls 9 11, the Discovery Clubs, for girls 12 and 13 and the Horizon Clubs for high school girls.
Here's the Law of Camp Fire Girls: Worship God. Seek Beauty. Give Service. Pursue Knowledge. Be Trustworthy. Hold on to Health. Glorify Work. Be Happy.
