Mary Ann Lee, age 13, of Willingboro, N.J., for her question:
WHERE DO FOUR STATES COME TOGETHER?
There is only one spot in the United States where four states meet. This location is where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah come together.
The exact location of Four Corners, as the spot is called, is a few miles from a main highway. A monument marks the location. It is surrounded by a concrete platform which bears the seals of the four states.
It is possible to put your finger over the "X" where the four states come together, and in doing so, you are actually putting your finger in four separate states at the same time.
The area is located in what is called the plateau region of the Rocky Mountain states. Near Four Corners you'll see lots of mountains, flat topped hills called mesas, gorges and deep canyons.
Also not too far away from Four Corners in Colorado is Mesa Verde National Park. Here are preserved some spectacular Indian cliff dwellings that are almost 1,000 years old.
