Michelle Baron, age 13, of El Paso, Texas, for her question:
WHEN WERE THE Y TEENS ORGANIZED?
Y Teens is a program for members of the Young Women's Christian Association who are of junior or high school age. The program aims to serve the educational, health, recreational and social needs of teen age women.
Y Teens started as a Little Girls' Christian Association in Oakland, Calif., in 1881. It was modeled for other girls' clubs throughout the United States.
In 1918, the program became known as Girl Reserves and its name was changed to Y Teens in 1947.
The Y Teens program has more than 250,000 participants.
Members of the Y Teen organization work to promote understanding among all people and to end racism.
