Andrew Ward, age 15, of Marquette, Mich., for his question:
WHY DO PEOPLE REMEMBER DOLLEY MADISON?
Dolley (CQ) Madison was a very famous Washington hostess. She was the wife of President James Madison. But she first gained fame as a White House hostess when her.husband served as Secretary of State under President Thomas Jefferson, a widower. Mrs. Madison often helped President Jefferson when he entertained guests.
People also remember Dolley Madison for her gallant action when the British invaded Washington during the War of 1812. She saved many state papers and a famous portrait of George Washington in her flight from Washington.
Dolley Madison did not spell her name "Dolly" as it is done today. Tradition also says wrongly that her real name was "Dorothea."
Dolley and John Todd Jr., a lawyer and a Quaker, were married in 1790. They had two sons. One of the sons and Todd died in 1793, and she married Madison a year later.
Dolley was also the gracious White House hostess during Madison's two terms as President.
