Norman Smith, age 13, of Bennington, Vt., for his question:
WHERE IS THE KHYBER PASS?
One of the most famous mountain passes in the world is the Khyber Pass. It connects the northern frontier of Pakistan with Afghanistan.
The Khyber Pass is the easiest route between the Indian peninsula and Afghanistan. It was an important military point for hundreds of years.
Before the partition of India, the British said that there could be no land invasion of Britain's rich Indian empire as long as the Khyber Pass was successfully defended.
The famous pass cuts between rugged mountains. The pass is 33 miles long and only 10 feet wide at its narrowest point.
Today both camel caravans and motor vehicles travel along the pass. Villages lie on either side of the pass. Some fortresses and watchtowers from the olden days still stand along the road. They had been used when feuds were common among the hill tribes.
A railway travels to the head of the Khyber Pass.
